Bachelor of Arts, Minor in Kinesiology

The B.A. Minor in Kinesiology is designed to be combined with another Minor in the Bachelor of Arts program, resulting in a Bachelor of Arts degree with a Minor in Kinesiology and a Minor in another discipline (e.g. history, math, geography, psychology etc.).  Some students also combine the Minor with a Major outside of the Bachelor of Arts program to add an applied human physical activity experience to their degree.

Students graduating with a B.A. Minor in Kinesiology combined with a Minor in another Bachelor of Arts discipline typically apply for a post-baccalaureate degree in Education and pursue a career as a professional educator at the elementary or secondary level.  Students are also using a Minor in Kinesiology to pursue careers in the fields of health and wellness, fitness and performance, professional coaching, care facilities, sport administration and public or private recreational and exercise facilities.

Bachelor of Kinesiology (Minor) Program Requirements

Lower-Level Kinesiology Core Courses Requirement (11 credits)

  • KIN 201 - Human Anatomy (4 credits)
  • KIN 220 - Human Physiology (4 credits)
  • One lower-level (200-level) KIN elective (3 credits)

  • It is recommended that Kinesiology students enroll in KIN 201 and 220 in their first year.

Kinesiology Activity Courses Requirement (3 Activity Courses required)

  • All Kinesiology activity courses are numbered in the 100 range. Each 100-level activity course is a 2-credit course. All Kinesiology Minor students are required to have a minimum of 3 activity courses. It is recommended that students take these activity courses in the first two years but taking the activity courses in years 3 & 4 can be done as well. In addition to the 100-level activity courses, Kinesiology offers four 200-level courses (KIN 203, KIN 222, KIN 270, KIN 285) that also count towards the 3 activity course requirement.

English Requirement (6 credits)

  • All students in undergraduate degree programs at VIU are required to complete the Degree English Requirement.

  • ENGL 204 is not accepted for the Degree English Requirement by the Kinesiology department, but could be used as an elective course.

Second Minor Lower-Level Requirement

  • Lower-level requirements for the second minor vary program to program. It is recommended that every Kinesiology Minor student meet with a Bachelor of Arts advisor to make sure that all requirements for the second minor are met.

Elective Courses

  • The remaining credits towards the 60 lower-level credits requirement will be elective courses that can be taken in a variety of programs at VIU. Some of these courses can be Kinesiology elective courses or elective courses in the second minor but taking a variety of lower-level courses from other programs is also encouraged.

Upper-Level Minor Core (Years 3 & 4) (60 credits)

Upper-Level Kinesiology Core Courses Requirement (18 credits)

  • Six upper-level (300-level or 400-level) KIN courses.

Second Minor Upper-Level Requirement (minimum 18 credits)

  • In addition to the required 18 Kinesiology upper-level credits, students are required to complete the upper-level requirements of a second Minor in another discipline within the Bachelor of Arts program.  It is highly recommended that students meet with a Bachelor of Arts advisor prior to beginning upper-level courses to make sure that all requirements are met.

Upper-Level Graduation Requirement

  • Important: All VIU students must have a minimum of 42 upper-level (300-level or 400-level) credits to graduate from VIU. The 6 upper-level Kinesiology courses required for the Bachelor of Arts, Minor in Kinesiology degree only adds up to 18 credits. The second Minor will be at least 18 upper-level credits as well so students will have a minimum of 36 upper-level credits. It is very important that every Bachelor of Arts, Minor in Kinesiology student include additional upper-level (300-level or 400-level) credits in their degree in order to meet the institutional requirement of a minimum of 42 upper-level (300-level or 400-level) credits.

Elective Courses

  • Beyond the degree requirement of 42 upper-level credits, the remaining 18 credits will consist of elective courses that can be taken in a variety of programs at VIU. Some of these courses can be additional upper-level courses in Kinesiology and/or the second Minor discipline or other elective courses from any year and any program provided the upper-level graduation requirement is met.
